BazaThe cultural heritage of Baza is remarkable, as befits a geographically strategic territory due to its character as a crossroads and intensely occupied throughout history by different civilisations. The Iberian-Roman city of Basti was one of the main Iberian fortified cities in the country, where in 1971 the famous Dama de Baza was found, undoubtedly the best representation of Iberian art. During Roman times Basti was the capital of the great Roman region of Bastetania and its importance grew as one of the main logistical nodes of the first great road built by the Romans in Spain in the 1st century BC, the Via Herculea, which linked Antequera and Cartagena. The Arabs changed the name to "medina Bastha" or "Batza", and from its period of splendour there are remains of an impregnable Alcazaba (citadel) and some beautiful Arab baths. CanilesCaniles is a beautiful municipality in the region of Baza, situated between the high plateau and the mountains, whose natural scenery forms part of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park. The origins of Caniles, known as Canilla in Arab times, date back to prehistoric times and much of its long and eventful history is linked to that of Baza, of which it was once a district. Ancient Roman gold mines and a rich industrial archaeological heritage associated with the history of the Baza - Lorca railway and its station. The route of the railway is offered today as a Greenway and its station has been recovered as an interesting Interpretation Centre of the history of the railway, of the historical mining in the region and of the impressive geological landscapes that the region has to offer.
