Imposing and full of history, this monumental fountain-watering trough was erected in 1607 next to the old Puerta del Peso or Puerta de La Puente, which guarded the southern access to the Muslim medina along the royal road to Lorca. For centuries it offered fresh water to travellers arriving in the city and served as a watering place for their mounts, becoming an essential point of daily transit. Its elegantly composed façade is organised with Tuscan pilasters that support a sober entablature where the original inscription can be read: "This work was ordered by Baça when D. Antiago, señor de Veas, was mayor of the town, and its mayor was the lawyer Mateo Ruiz de Morón. Year 1607". Between the panels is a rich heraldic decoration: the coat of arms of Philip III, that of the city and that of the mayor, D. Antonio Álvarez de Bohórquez. Beneath this ensemble is a majestic white marble pillar and basin, from which water flows through four bronze spouts: two emerge from human faces carved in the centre and another two from crowned lions flanking the ends.
