Cascamorras sculpture group
In the heart of the Plaza de Las Eras stands the Fuente del Cascamorras, a monument that celebrates one of Baza's most emblematic traditions. Created by the artist Augusto Moreno Rodríguez in 2011, this sculptural ensemble represents the historic rivalry between Baza and Guadix for the custody of the Virgen de la Piedad, and is a key point on the route of the Cascamorras, which is celebrated every year on 6 September. The central element is the Cascamorras, bare-chested and waving the flag, with four ribbons symbolising the promises made to the Virgin. Behind him, a character tries to reach him, with the palm of his hand open and covered with black paint. In front of him, another participant bows in an almost reverential gesture, holding the cascaborra, a wooden pole with a rope that ends in a large leather-covered knot. To the left, in the direction towards which the Cascamorras is advancing, a young man raises his hand, adding dynamism to the scene. The sculptural ensemble is more than three metres high, six metres long and three metres wide, and was cast in lost-wax bronze, giving the figures a realism and strength that capture the energy and emotion of this centuries-old tradition.
