Cid Hiaya statue

Grey marble sculpture honouring a key leader in Nasrid history, located near the Arab Baths, ideal for exploring the cultural heritage.

It is in the Barrio de Santiago, in the square that gives access to the Arab Baths, dedicated to the warlord Cid-Hiaya Al Nayar. Sculpture made by Francisco Mateos Sanchez from Bastetano in grey marble from Sierra Elvira. He was a Spanish-Arab aristocrat, politician and military man, cousin of Boabdil and brother-in-law of El Zagal, a key figure in the final fall of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. He surrendered Baza to the Christians in 1489, taking the name of Pedro de Granada (the beginning of the powerful Moorish family of the Granada Venegas) and after the conquest of Granada (1492), he became Mayor of the city of Granada (1500) and Mayor of Baza.
