Cid Hiaya statue

Cid Hiaya statue

Grey marble sculpture honouring a key leader in Nasrid history, located near the Arab Baths, ideal for exploring the cultural heritage.

It is located in the Santiago neighbourhood, in the square that leads to the Arab Baths, dedicated to the leader Cid-Hiaya Al Nayar. The sculpture was created by Francisco Mateos Sánchez from Bastet in grey marble from Sierra Elvira. He was a Spanish-Arab aristocrat, politician and military leader, cousin of Boabdil and brother-in-law of El Zagal, a key figure in the final fall of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. He surrendered Baza to the Christians in 1489, taking the name Pedro de Granada (the beginning of the powerful Moorish family of the Granada Venegas) and after the conquest of Granada (1492), he became Chief Bailiff of the city of Granada (1500) and mayor of Baza. He is also known for creating the bust of Miguel de Cervantes.
