Lady of Baza Statue
An Iberian sculpture in the historic centre, rich in enigma and symbolism, offers a unique cultural experience with its history of worship and mystery.
A 2 m. high reproduction of the Lady of Baza will welcome anyone who enters the historic centre of Baza through the Lorca Gate. Made by a sculptor from Granada, Miguel Moreno, who has also made the bust of Miguel de Cervantes in the Alameda de Cervantes Park and the sculptural group in honour of the Emigrant, in the Plaza de San Antón.6th century BC Iberian sculpture carved in limestone. Found on 20 July 1971 by the archaeologist Fco Presedo in the necropolis of Cerro Santuario. Tomb 155, with the singularity that it was a tomb made for a single person, which is not very common. It was inside a funerary chamber, where there was also an amphora that communicated with the surface by means of a funnel, through which libations were probably made as liquid offerings, indicating that the person buried there was worshipped. The theories that have been put forward are that she could have been a deified warrior or a priestess queen, in short, a female figure of great social importance as a queen or sorceress, possibly even with political and economic involvement in the city.her face has Mediterranean features, when she was found her rich polychromy was almost intact, with red and blue colours in the mantle edged with a red and white checkered fretwork. She is full of enigmas and symbolism, her quality clothes and large jewels tell us that she was an important woman in Basti, seated on a winged chair, symbol of divinity, the front legs of the throne are lion's claws, her original colours are blue, red, brown and black. On one of the sides there is a hollow where the remains of the body of a woman aged 20-30 years were deposited, the pigeon which she delicately holds in her left hand, interpreted as a link between the mortal woman and the goddess who acts as protector of both the bird and the bones of the deceased. As for her trousseau, the ceramic pieces and their decoration refer to the origin and lineage of the deceased. The four warrior's panoply deposited at the feet of the deceased is interpreted as an offering, after the warrior's fight that took place during the funeral ceremony; it is the only case of a burial of a woman with weapons in her grave goods.
