Iberian Necropolis of Cerro SantuarioStart of the RouteThe Cerro del Santuario is a necropolis from the Iberian period, excavated between 1968 and 1971, where the funerary statue known as the Lady of Baza was found in 1971. This cemetery was mainly in use between the 5th and 4th centuries BC, with a ritual consisting of the cremation of the corpses and the deposition of their ashes in tombs, which could vary from simple pits with a clay urn, to chambers excavated in the subsoil, with a much richer grave goods, such as weapons, imported Greek ceramics, and gold and bronze ornaments, among other offerings. There are currently 184 known burials in the necropolis, to which we can add the foundations of a Roman turriform funerary monument, which represents the continuity of the sacralisation of this space long after the Iberians had finished using it. This necropolis is one of the most important for learning about the world of death among the ancient Bastians.Ibero-Roman City of BastiStart of the RouteCerro Cepero is a settlement on a walled hill of almost 7 ha in area, which in the 8th century BC became an Iberian oppidum, through the grouping of the villages of the Final Bronze Age in the region. This oppidum attained great importance, as witnessed by its valuable necropolis, the wall with massive quadrangular bastions, which encircles the hill, and the fact that the inhabitants of a large region were given the nickname of bastetanos at the beginning of the Roman conquest in the 3rd century BC. The Roman conquest began a process of monumentalisation of the city, which continued until the 3rd century AD. From that time onwards it fell into decline, which ended with its abandonment in the 8th century AD, and the place name was transferred to the current location of Baza, as Madina Bazta.Take a look at Archaeological Sites in 360º: click here and also here or here.
