Baza Fault

Discover a unique geopark with geotourism routes that reveal the geological history through impressive Pliocene and Pleistocene formations.
The BAZA FAULT is one of the most important lig (Sites of Geological Interest) within the Quaternary Geopark of the Valles del norte de Granada, located in the centre of the Guadix-Baza sedimentary basin, at the base of the Jabalcón hill. This fracture of the terrain is located exactly in the Barranco Gallego, controlling the structure, sedimentation and geomorphology of the Geopark. One of the best outcrops of the approximately 40 kilometres long fault, which is divided into three segments, can be found there. The red materials belong to the Guadix Formation, which dates from the Pliocene, a division of the geological time scale belonging to the Neogene period. The white materials belong to the Baza Formation, which belongs to the Pleistocene geological period. In between these two formations is the fault zone, which began to be created in the Miocene. The fracture is the natural boundary between the east and west of the Geopark. During your visit, you will see the influence it has had on the evolution of the basin within the Geopark, conditioning its sedimentation and constituting the natural boundary of the two basins (Guadix and Baza). The Baza Fault is part of one of the MAIN ROUTES that GREEN WALK (a company from Bastet, pioneer in geotourism and geoexperiences) has designed for you to LOVE, ENJOY AND ENJOY THE LANDSCAPES AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT of the northern part of GRANADA from a totally different approach. Through its route Huellas de los terremotos: conoce el pasado para entender el futuro (Footprints of earthquakes: know the past to understand the future), you will enter the Baza Fault. You will learn about neotectonics and you will observe in situ the Pliocene materials (Guadix formation) and Pleistocene materials (Baza formation) and how the neotectonic forces have acted for centuries.Green Walk, with its routes focused on the geological heritage, natural and cultural resources of this valuable environment spreads the Quaternary Geopark.
