Cloister of the Convent of Santo Domingo and exhibition space

Historic complex with arcaded cloister and cultural centre in restored church, ideal for exploring architecture and enjoying exhibitions.
The convent was founded in 1553 and had 75 friars. Its church was built between 1608 and 1617, and after the disentailment of the 19th century it passed into private hands and underwent important transformations, including the construction in the first third of the 20th century of the Dengra Theatre, which was built on the grounds of the old orchard. The convent's cloister with its two orders of arcades on Tuscan marble columns is particularly noteworthy. The church has undergone major alterations and is partly destroyed. A cupola-shaped space with a lantern has been preserved, used for the staircase leading to a dwelling (which occupies the outbuildings of the former convent) and the chancel with the choir and sacristy. It has an interesting colonnaded doorway with a double niche. Both the cloister and the church have been restored and the latter houses a Cultural Centre and exhibition hall. The square that stands in front of this monumental complex was traditionally known as the "market square", as this is where the weekly food and livestock market was held, making it a social and commercial meeting place.
