Old Town Hall

A Renaissance building with a loggia of arches and historic chambers, it stands out for its architecture and houses the Municipal Museum, ideal for history l...

Its construction was part of a larger architectural programme that also included the prison and the house of the corregidor, which have not survived. Construction began in 1530 and it was already in use in 1539, although it was not completed or inaugurated until 1590. It has two storeys. The lower section is largely occupied by a loggia of semicircular arches on columns of composite order according to Italian models, those in the centre, and Doric at the ends, behind which can be admired four magnificent Lombard chambers, used in the siege of the city by the armies of the Catholic Monarchs. This space is covered with a magnificent alfarje with beams on corbels that supports the chapterhouse, which is in turn covered by a Mudejar coffered ceiling in terms of form, but with clear Renaissance decoration like the previous one. Above the loggia there is a continuous balcony, on braces, which runs along the entire façade, giving light to the chapter house. On the façade, above the spandrels of the arches, are the heraldry of the city, of Felipe II and of the corregidor D. Pedro de Miranda Salón, as well as a commemorative inscription. Today, together with the adjoining building of the Alhóndiga, it houses the headquarters of the Municipal Museum of Baza, after having been the city's Town Hall for more than 450 years.
